Disc protrusion

The disc protrusion (syn. disc bulge or “incomplete prolapse”) is a degenerative change of intervertebral discs. Here, the annulus fibrosus (annulus) of the disc as opposed to the (complete) or ruptured disc prolapse not only very low, but bulging outward.

Symptoms usually only solves a protrusion of the spine from (lumbago), rarely a complete intervertebral disc syndrome with radiation of pain into the outer extremities.

The treatment of a protrusion is usually conservative (ie non-operative) is created. For this, the manual therapy include as part of a physio-therapy, or an osteopathic treatment. In parallel, often analgesics such as ibuprofen or diclofenac are used for temporary pain. In cases of persistent pain syndrome for several months out sometimes to a targeted Schmerztheraphie also processes such as periradicular therapy should be applied.

Herniated disc

The intervertebral disc herniation (prolapsus nuclei Latin pulposi, herniated discs, prolapsed disc, and herniated disc, BSP) is a disease of the spine, where parts of the disc into the spinal canal – the space in which lies the spinal cord – to step forward. In contrast to the disc protrusion (bulging) is the prolapse of the fibrous cartilage ring of the disc (annulus fibrosus) is torn completely or partially, while the posterior longitudinal ligament (posterior longitudinal ligament) can remain intact (so-called Subligamentous herniated disc).

The cause is often congestion at existing damage to the intervertebral discs, a herniated disc but can also occur without any external cause. Symptoms of herniated disc are strong, often radiating pain in the extremities, often with a feeling of numbness in the distribution of the trapped nerve root, sometimes paralysis. Treatment is usually conservative possible, serious incidents must be treated surgically.
